Butter a 8x8-inch (original recipe: 9x13) pan and set aside.
Melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add marshmallows and melt, stirring frequently to avoid burning. Add puffed rice, stir to coat. Transfer to buttered pan and press to shape. Add sprinkles if desired. Let cool.
